How to Relieve Heel Pain Naturally: A Teacher's Recovery from Plantar Fasciitis

Nimit Bhandari. Apirl, 2026

A 40-year-old female who works as a teacher, came to see me with severe pain in her heels. The pain was worse when she first stood up in the morning and after prolong standing at work.

She spent most of her day on her feet and was wearing boots that were not very supportive. At home, she usually walked barefoot or in socks on hard floors.

After assessment, it was clear that her symptoms were consistent with plantar fasciitis, a very common condition that causes pain under the heel. It often happens due to people who have standing jobs, walks on hard surfaces, even people with high arches or flat feet.

The patient mentioned that some of her colleagues had similar problems and were resolved by steroid (cortisone) injections. She was considering the same option for herself. She was educated about her probable diagnosis and was also explained regarding CS injections. While steroid injections can sometimes reduce pain, they mainly calm inflammation and may not address the root cause. It's like just masking the pain. I asked the patient to rather try conservative management along with footwear modification.

Switching to comfortable and supportive footwear, wearing cushioned slippers at home instead of walking barefoot, gentle calf and foot stretching exercises, rolling the foot over a frozen water bottle to reduce pain and stiffness, simple contrast bath techniques to help circulation were suggested to her and a follow up was booked.

After four weeks she reported more than 70% improvement in her pain. She was walking more comfortably, managing her workdays better, and no longer considering an injection. The modifications suggested to her helped her a lot, and other management techniques were easy to fit into her daily routine. Small modifications along with few exercises and stretches helped her to ease the pain.
