Don’t let anxiety get in your way

Ellie. November 08, 2022

Anxiety is a generalised mood disorder that results in feelings of apprehension, fear or worry. Anxiety can be characterised into different types which include:

Panic disorder - recurrent panic attacks over a period of one month. Panic attacks are intense periods of fear associated with palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

Generalised anxiety disorder - excessive and unrealistic worry over a period of at least six months, which is associated with difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and sleep problems.

Phobic disorders - intense, irrational fear of certain objects (such as snakes, spiders, or blood) or situations (such as heights, speaking in front of a group, or public places), which may lead to a panic attack.

How does anxiety stop me getting the help I need?

As you can imagine, we speak to a lot of people over the course of a week that want need help in our Physiotherapy Clinics in Sittingbourne, Maidstone and Bexley.

So many people that we speak to have put off calling us until they are in so much pain or discomfort that they are forced to by either a loved one or a family member.

One of the reasons for this is the anxiety which you feel before picking up the phone. There can be many reasons why an anxious person would be reluctant to pick up the phone to book an appointment that can really help them.

They would find a multitude of reasons not to make the call and then suffer in silence. This means that any pain would be sustained or get worse and any condition would continue to go untreated.

Anxiety is a massive burden on people when it stops them doing what they know needs to be done. There is often an irrational fear of anything medical and Physiotherapy is put into this category. When your thoughts and feeling stop you getting the treatment you need, it’s often a good idea to take a step back and remember why you wanted to pick up the phone in the first place.

Physiotherapy is not scary but sometimes accepting you need help can be. At Xcel Health, we are here to help everybody and this is the reason that our Physiotherapists became Physiotherapists. Their biggest satisfaction is to help people and make them better, regaining their quality of life and getting them back to themselves. We want everybody to become live a life free of pain.

Picking up the phone and blocking out that anxious feeling inside of you means you have taken the first step. Physiotherapy treatment can also play an important role in the management of anxiety as it is effective in reducing tension in your muscles and improving sleep, mood and self-esteem.

Give us a ring today to book your appointment and have a chat with one of our team. We’llyou’re your fears to rest and we would love to be able to help you on the first step of your recovery.
